Most people go their entire lives without needing to hire a bondsman, so if you’ve found yourself in a position where you’ve been asked to help arrange bail bonds for a friend or family member, you probably don’t have a lot of understanding about how the process works or what you should look for in a bail bonds company.
The first thing you should know, is that in California, the cost to purchase bail bonds is 10% of the defendant’s full bail amount. If bail is $10,000 you can expect to pay $1,000 to hire a bondsman.
There are, however, some companies that try to tack on other fees. They may require an application or credit check fee. Some will try to tell customers that if they pay an additional amount of money, they can have the defendant’s bail bonds expedited. Neither of these things are common practice and it’s not possible to “expedite” a bail bond. Others sometimes try to charge clients an additional fee to have the bond posted.
If the Riverside bondsman you’re working with is trying to pass on additional fees, hang up and call someone else!
