Members of the Indio Police Department are asking residents to help them identify a man who tried to lure two local boys into his van.
The unidentified suspect is said to have pulled the vehicle up alongside the pair as they were skateboarding. The driver told them he needed help finding his dog.
Authorities are reportedly investigating the case as an attempted child abduction. The 13 and 12 year old boys were able to get away. They reported the incident to family members, who then contacted the Indio Police.
The incident took place early Monday morning outside of a local pharmacy. After the man approached the boys he leaned over and opened the passenger door. They took off, and he laid his foot on the gas and drove quickly in what appeared to be the same westbound direction.
Police say the pair did not know the driver and had never seen the van before. They described the driver as being creepy and giving off a weird vibe.
The suspect is described as being a Hispanic male between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. He is believed to be of medium height and was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt. The witnesses said he is balding, and that the gray van did not have any distinguishing marks. They were unable to make out which state the license plate had been issued by although they do believe the license place number contained a 6.
When the suspect is apprehended he will likely be booked into the Indio Jail. Bail could be set in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. This will all depend on whether he has a prior history of arrest and/or if he has any outstanding warrants.
Anyone who believes they have information that could help lead to his capture and arrest is asked to contact the Indio Police.
