A spokesperson for the Temecula Police Department has confirmed that officers arrested 19-year-old Franky Mendez on suspicion of car theft.
The incident happened in mid-March, according to a report by Patch.com, when officers responded to a call about a vehicle theft; investigators located the missing car about two hours later.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Collazo said the vehicle was found in the parking lot of a nearby business. Officers checked the area, he said, and they found the suspect a short distance away.
The suspect was identified as Franky Mendez; Mendez was arrested and charged with felony theft, being under the influence of a controlled substance and felony theft with prior convictions. Police say the suspect has a felony record out of Los Angeles County, and that this was not Mendez’s first brush with the law.
Mendez was taken to the Riverside County Jail to be booked and processed. Although Mendez is not currently in custody, Patch.com reports he was issued a no bail bonds hold at the time he was booked.
It’s unclear whether the defendant was able to post Riverside bail bonds.
